What is Predictive Wi-Fi Design?

Predictive Wi-Fi design is performed by our expert Wi-Fi network design team, using software such as Ekahau Survey and iBwave.

We import floor plans or CAD drawings and model your building in 3D – including walls, doors, elevator shafts, floors, atriums, etc.

We then use simulation to predict the coverage, data rates and capacity of a Wi-Fi network for your premises.

We design to tight specifications, determined during the Wi-Fi Network Planning Phase (Stage 1).

What are the Advantages?

Predictive Wi-Fi design – also known as Simulated, Virtual, Desktop or Remote Wi-Fi design – can be performed quickly to estimate the quantity and locations of Wi-Fi access points for your premises.

We can also design Wi-Fi networks for building which are undergoing construction or refurbishment.

Predictive Wi-Fi design is ideally combined with on-site Wi-Fi survey using APs on Tripods – the so-called AP-on-a-Stick Wi-Fi survey – but using our vastly superior MAPT™ Wi-Fi survey methodology.

Is Predictive Wi-Fi Design Accurate and Dependable?

With predictive Wi-Fi network design, a site visit is always recommended beforehand, and in some cases is essential.

Simulated Wi-Fi design is not as accurate as an in-situ Wi-Fi Site Survey – where we place Wi-Fi access points on tripods to design your network precisely for your building.

After your Wi-Fi network is installed, a post-install Validation survey is essential – to ensure that your network is performing as expected.

Predictive Wi-Fi Network Design

Predictive Wi-Fi network design, also known as Virtual Wi-Fi Survey, Simulated Wi-Fi design, Remote or Desktop Wi-Fi survey, is performed by our Wi-Fi design team using tools such as Ekahau Survey (Ekahau Pro) and iBwave Suite.

We import your building floor plans or CAD documents, model your building – including walls, doors, floors, elevator shafts, etc – then use software-based simulation to determine the optimum numbers and locations of APs for your building.

Heatmaps and visualisations show the predicted Wi-Fi network Coverage, Signal Strengths (dBm), Signal-to-Noise Ratios (dB), Data Rates (Mbps), Wi-Fi cell overlap, network capacity and more.

Predictive Wi-Fi design works well for for buildings undergoing construction or refurbishment, and is useful for determining cable drop points, a Bill of Materials (BoM) and budgetary costs.

Some people in the Wi-Fi industry have claimed that predictive Wi-Fi network design can replace manual on-site Wi-Fi design using Wi-Fi access points on tripods.

In many cases, this isn’t true.

The accuracy of predictive Wi-Fi design is limited by several factors:

  • The attenuation of Wi-Fi signals by walls, doors, supporting steel beams, concrete columns, racks and shelving is all estimated by the Wi-Fi network designer;
  • Current design software cannot model your building precisely;
  • Most predictive design software does not account for Wi-Fi signal reflections and Multipath effects.

When Predictive Wi-Fi design is used, you should commission an on-site survey either before or after installation of the Wi-Fi network.

Pre-installation Wi-Fi Survey is used to design a Wi-Fi network that will perform well in your premises.

Whilst Predictive Wi-Fi design can help, on-site survey using Wi-Fi access points placed on tripods gives the most accurate and reliable results – IF the access points-on-tripods survey is performed correctly.

Unfortunately, many Wi-Fi companies survey with only one AP on a tripod, and this simply isn’t adequate.

Post-Installation Wi-Fi Validation Survey is performed once your Wi-Fi network has been installed and configured.

The primary objectives are to determine:

  • The Coverage provided by the Wi-Fi network
  • Signal strengths, data rates and roaming boundaries
  • The Capacity and Performance of the Wi-Fi network
  • Whether the installation and configuration are fit-for-purpose
  • What Optimisations that can be made to the network.

A Post-Installation Wi-Fi Validation Survey should always be performed if only Predictive Wi-Fi Design has been used or if your pre-installation survey was sub-optimal.

New Rules Apply

With the new IEEE 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E standards, new Wi-Fi network design rules apply. This may mean that your existing Wi-Fi network installation is not suitable for a straightforward technology upgrade – replacing existing Access Points with newer Wi-Fi 6 APs.
